This puts a lot of pressure on Katniss to succeed, but also displays how little freedom she has to do what she wishes.
Page 92, paragraph 3: “A mockingjay is a creature the capitol never intended to exist. They hadn’t counted on the highly controlled jabberjay having the brains to adapt to the wild, to pass on its genetic code, to thrive in a new form. They hadn’t anticipated its will to live.” This quotation shows that there is a chance for rebelling all over the districts is very high. The mockingjay is a symbol that is worn by people who go against the capitol, and can be found in every setting in the book. When Katniss says, “They hadn’t anticipated its will to live,” she is referring to the capitol thought they had shut down all hopes and chances of rebelling, but underestimated the citizens wills to live.
2. - The fence surrounding District 12 is an interesting object in the novel, as it shows that they are trapped in this geographical location, with no way of escaping to the world beyond the fence. Katniss does go past the fence to hunt sometimes, but all she can find is wilderness. This causes a mood in District 12 of people being trapped, with no possibility of change in their lives.
- Katniss’s old house shows just how poor everyone in district 12 is considering they are above average there, and the house has a dirt floor, and is very small. This makes the general mood in district 12 slightly depressing, but not horrible, because the people living there seem to except the fact that this is their life, and make the most of it.
- The Capitol shows that this time period must takes place in the future, as the technology surpasses anything we have today. For example, the ability to create holograms, creating completely new animals by cross breeding and the huge, amazingly build buildings.
- The mockingjay pin that Katniss wears demonstrates the environment of the characters, by giving them hope through any hard times. It is a symbol of freedom and rebelling against the capitol.
